Alcazaba de Málaga

Alcazaba de Málaga

The Alcazaba de Malaga is a remarkably impressive ancient fortress primarily erected in the 11th century, which has undergone several reinforcements over time. Its strategic positioning is impeccable, perched on a hill overlooking the city and the sea. This vantage point is the very reason why it was chosen as the main residence for the Muslim rulers of Malaga. Until the 15th century, when the Muslims were driven from the area, it served as the center of power and authority.

The fortress was designed with two layers of protective walls, offering a robust defense system. Some of these defensive towers remain preserved today, continuing to awe visitors with their imposing strength. Within the fortress lie two Moorish palaces adorned with exquisite, intricate decoration and several simpler structures.

But the allure of Alcazaba de Malaga is not limited to its rich history and stunning architecture. It is equally renowned for its splendid gardens that host historical fountains and decorative pools. So, besides its historical and architectural appeal, the Alcazaba also offers its visitors an enchanting horticultural retreat.
