Grand Master's Palace

Grand Master's Palace

Constructed in the 14th century, the resplendent Palace stood not only as the opulent abode of the Grand Master, but also as the paramount administrative heart of the esteemed Knights of the Order of St. John. Within its hallowed halls, the grandiose council chamber played host to the illustrious members of the Order, while the Grand Master's private chambers were a testament to his revered position.

Alas, during the shadowy epoch of the Ottoman era, the once-regal palace was relegated to a state of neglect, eventually suffering grievous damage due to a nearby explosion. It was not until 1937 that the painstaking restoration of this once-magnificent residence began in earnest.

In its current incarnation as a museum and exhibition center, visitors are graced with the opportunity to behold the meticulously restored splendor of the Palace's grand chambers. Further enchantment awaits as one gazes upon the captivating ancient Greek mosaics, lovingly transported to the Palace in the 20th century by Italian restorers, whose expertise breathed new life into these timeless treasures.
